Tōyō Miyatake was born in Japan in 1895; came to Los Angeles in 1909; studied with Harry K. Shigeta and Edward Weston; established
a successful photography business in Los Angeles's Little Tokyo district; during World War II internment of Japanese Americans,
documented daily life at the Manzanar concentration camp and other relocation areas; continued professional career after the
war until retirement in 1960; died 1979. The Little Tokyo street Toyo Miyatake Way was named after him.
